Winter in Maine, month 4.
Johnny and I are on a Thai food kick after finding an authentic local restaurant that serves it. My favorite dishes so far are the red curry and spicy bamboo, with a taro bubble tea on the side.
I love having variety in cuisine. I think this comes from my upbringing. My mother was a great cook, born and raised in the deep south. She loved making everything from Polish to Greek, Italian, Mexican, Cajun and Creole, and Chinese food, aside from traditional American dishes. She would often mix cuisines in one meal. One night we might have borscht with sauerkraut, and then baklava for dessert. Through her love for variety, I found the joy of experiencing new things and acquired a taste for many different spices and flavors.
The only Thai food I can recall having growing up is a red curry paste that I ate on eggs, but as an adult I never really had a good Thai restaurant around nor traveled to Thailand. It's sad that I've gone 40 years without incorporating this cuisine into my repertoire, and there are still so many I have not tried. The last time that Johnny and I were in New York, we ate at a Korean restaurant and it was wonderful. I love how different countries have their own unique palette of flavors and ingredients. It's funny to me how people often lump "Asian food" into one category, as if it all tastes the same. That's as silly as "European food". An Irish lamb stew is pretty different from French escargot!
